I’m a dreamer. I have all kinds of dreams. Sometimes I’m in a classroom on test day – totally unprepared for the exam – sitting in nothing but my underwear. More than once I’ve been speeding down a busy highway on the seat of my pants. I’ve often dreamed that I could fly (more on that later). Last night, I dreamed that I was eating Pop-Tarts with a navy captain on the deck of a submarine – that was just weird. But I’m completely normal.
I’m a dreamer. In fact, my parents always told me that, too. It’s not like they didn’t want me to succeed, it’s just that they knew I wouldn’t actually become Superman. I’m guessing they also weren’t looking forward to seeing me wearing tights with underpants on the outside. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But in any event, I admit that I had a few goals that might have exceeded reasonable expectations of success.
Life is about goals and expectations. Everyone needs goals. But too many goals can keep you stuck in the same place. Having just a few select goals makes for a reasonable expectation of success. You may be thinking that dreaming about underwear, Pop-Tarts and flying could not possibly have any relevance to any point that I may be making. But what I’m really talking about is the relationship between being able to dream and being able to succeed. I think it’s important to define reasonable goals and to set your expectations high. If you do that, you will likely succeed.
But what is a reasonable goal? I’m glad you asked. Let’s say you are in the market for x-ray equipment, but you find that the prices for new equipment are unreasonable. You know that buying used x-ray equipment on the internet is the least expensive but also carries with it the lowest of expectations. So your goal – your more reasonable goal – would be to find a great refurbished x-ray system that performs the job well AND doesn’t break the bank.
And that is when I would fly in with my underpants outside my tights! Figurative speaking, of course.
